What To Do After a Flood

No one welcomes a natural disaster, but there’s no denying that they happen. As long as your family is safe, the best course of action is to move forward and rebuild. Since it can be a bit overwhelming, here’s a checklist to follow of what to do after a flood.

What To Do After a Flood:

Check the main power switch.

If it wasn’t turned off before you left, you’ll need an electrician to check that your home is safe to enter.

Beware of appliances.

Some may have moved or been compromised during the flood, so don’t use your appliances or your HVAC or sewage system until it’s inspected.

Check for damages.

Look for buckled floors or walls and any other structural damage.

Watch out for debris.

Make sure to avoid broken glass, muddy areas, or any other dangerous materials that the flood left behind.

Don’t drink the water.

Flood waters may have contaminated your sewage system, so have your water tested before using it.

Document the damage.

Take pictures of everything that has been damaged to send to your insurance company. If you can get videos, that may be even better.

Start cleaning up.

You’ll need plenty of protective gear — face masks, gloves, boots, etc. — as well as large plastic bags and containers for disposing of or cleaning large items. Pro tip: Make sure to keep children or animals away from the cleanup for their safety.
