Your water is a rusty color.

If you turn on your faucet and get water than is a rusty color, a) gross, and b) your water heater is failing.

Your water is muddy.

In the same regard, if you’re getting muddy or sandy water, there is probably too much sediment in your tank — a sure sign your unit is on its way out.

You’re only getting warm water.

If your unit is set between 120 and 140 degrees, but you’re only getting lukewarm water, your heating element is probably failing.
