A lot of things in your home can take a beating during the holidays — your entryway rug from all the foot traffic, your living couches from how many people are going to sit on them, and your cookware from how much food it’s going to prepare. Thing is, when you have a lot of people over for the holidays, your plumbing gets put into overdrive too. When it comes to keeping your plumbing safe during holiday parties, these are a few things to keep in mind.
Prepare Your Toilets
As the food keeps coming and the drinks keep flowing, your toilet will probably end up being used every 10 minutes, if not more often. Save water by installing a dual flush system, and remind guests to only flush toilet paper — not wipes, sanitary items, or anything else.
Protect Your Garbage Disposal
There are a lot of things that should not go down your garbage disposal, such as bones, starchy foods, etc., so make sure they don’t. When cooking, make sure to avoid pouring any oil or grease down the disposal, and once dinner is over, have a garbage can available for guests to easily dispose of their food. You should also run the water when you’re using the disposal to avoid forming clogs.
Catch Loose Hair
If you have any guests staying overnight, they’ll probably to shower. Place hair traps over all of your shower drains to catch any shedding hair and prevent it from clogging your shower drain. You may also want to limit the amount of conditioner or body wash in your shower since these form more soap scum that clogs drains.
