New Year's Resolutions for Homeowners

We’re betting that, by this time, you’ve already made your resolutions for the new year — but that’s not to say you can’t add a few to the list. While you probably focused on resolutions that better yourself, why not try ones that better your home? These are some New Year’s resolutions for homeowners that you’ll be glad you followed.

Install Surge Protectors

With all the electronic devices we’re sure you have to plug in and charge, your home can easily get overloaded with too much electricity. Installing whole-home surge protectors can keep your wiring safe and prevent power surges.

Prevent Mold in Your Bathroom

Excess humidity in your bathroom can lead to mold growth, so it’s important to take measures to prevent this. Always have your fan on when you shower, squeegee your shower doors and tiles after you shower, and waterproof the grout lines in your bathroom tile.

Fix Your Faucet Flow

Over time, sediments can build up on your faucets and shower heads, (especially if you have hard water) making your water flow slower. Mix together equal parts of water and white vinegar in a heavy duty plastic bag, and hang it around your faucet or shower head for 15 minutes to help break down the sediments and improve the flow of water.

Check Your Water Heater’s Temperature

Prevent danger by making sure your water heater’s temperature isn’t too high. Safety experts recommend having your unit set to 120℉, but the thing is, many dials don’t have numbers. Check your owner’s manual for instructions on how to set it, or ask your plumber to check during a water heater maintenance visit — because, of course, you’ll have that done for the new year.

Install Motion-Sensing Lights Outside

While these provide you with convenient light when you’re coming home at night, they’re also a great safety precaution and proven crime deterrent. Have motion-sensing lights installed around doors and ground floor windows.
