What's in My Water?

When you come inside on a hot day and pour yourself a glass of water from your kitchen faucet, you’re probably only thinking about the cool relief that drink is offering you. Thing is, you should start thinking about what’s in your water, too.

Your home’s water can be filled with a number of contaminants that can be harmful to your health and home plumbing.

Arsenic

We bet any time you’ve heard of this element, it hasn’t been in in a good light. That’s because the inorganic type of arsenic is toxic to our bodies and has been linked to several kinds of cancer.

Calcium

While a little bit of calcium in our diets is good, calcium in your home’s water supply can cause you to have hard water. This can result in calcium spots on your plumbing fixtures, dry skin and hair, soap scum buildup, and dry and itchy clothing.

Chlorine

This chemical can be added to water supplies to disinfect drinking water but leaves a very noticeable taste and odor behind if too much is used. Imagine drinking a glass of pool water — yuck!

Copper

Typically, your water can contain copper elements if it travels through a plumbing system of copper pipes. Having copper in your water can result in stained plumbing fixtures and clothing, poor tasting water, and potentially even stomach irritation.

Iron

Water with too much iron in it can cause rust-colored stains in your toilet bowls and sink — which typically can only be removed once the water no longer has iron in it.

Lead

Lead is one of the most dangerous, yet common, contaminants found in water supplies. If you continuously drink lead-contaminated water, you can suffer from a number of serious health issues, and children can experience even worse issues.

pH

The acidity of your water has an effect on how safe it is for your plumbing. The ideal pH level is 7, so if your water acidity is below that, it can corrode your pipes and plumbing fixtures. If it is above 7, the water can leave sediment spots on your faucets
